Square Yard Calculator and Carpet Estimate

One square yard is 9 square feet. To convert square feet to square yards, divide by 9; to go back, multiply by 9. A 12 by 15 foot room is 180 square feet, or 20 square yards. Carpet is often priced by the square yard, so the carpet tab also estimates how much roll to buy.

How to convert square feet to square yards

Divide the square feet by 9, because a square yard is 3 ft by 3 ft. To go back, multiply the square yards by 9.

How to estimate carpet

Carpet is cut from a roll of fixed width. In the US the most common width is 12 ft, and some styles come 13 ft 2 in or 15 ft wide. You buy whole strips of the roll, and each strip runs the full length of the room.

The carpet tab tries both directions. It counts the strips needed to cover the room, multiplies by the strip length, and picks the direction that uses less carpet. The number of seams is the number of strips minus one.

A wider roll often means fewer seams and less waste in a large room. Add a percentage for pattern match if the carpet needs it.

For boxed floors such as laminate, try flooring by the box.

Frequently asked questions

How do you convert square feet to square yards?

Divide the square feet by 9, because one square yard is 3 feet by 3 feet, or 9 square feet. For example, 180 square feet divided by 9 is 20 square yards, and 280 square feet is about 31.11 square yards. To go from square yards to square feet, multiply by 9.

How do you calculate carpet for a room?

Measure the room's length and width, then work out how many strips of the carpet roll it takes to cover the width. Each strip is as long as the room. A 14 by 20 foot room with a 12 foot roll needs two 14 foot strips, which is 28 feet of roll, or about 37.33 square yards.

Why do I need more carpet than the room's square yards?

Carpet comes in rolls of a fixed width, so you buy whole strips and trim off what does not fit. A 14 by 20 foot room is about 31.11 square yards of floor, but two strips from a 12 foot roll come to about 37.33 square yards. Matching a pattern can add more.

How do you measure a room in square yards?

Measure the length and width in feet, multiply to get square feet, then divide by 9. A room 12 feet by 15 feet is 180 square feet, which is 20 square yards. If you measure in yards instead, multiply the two numbers directly: 4 yards by 5 yards is 20 square yards.

How wide is a roll of carpet?

In the US, carpet rolls are most often 12 feet wide, and some styles come 13 feet 2 inches or 15 feet wide. Check the width of the carpet you want before you plan, because a wider roll can mean fewer seams and less waste in a large room. Pick the width in the carpet tab above.
